Department for Children Schools and Families

The Department for Children Schools and Families (DCFS) website www.teachernet.gov.uk/wholeschool/sen/parentcarers contains answers to key questions:

  • What are Special Education Needs (SEN)?
  • If my child has SEN what next?
  • Who do I contact if I do not think my childs needs are being met?

DCFS produce a guide for parent/carers. This guide can be downloaded, it aims to help you understand:

  • What SEN needs are
  • What you can do if you are worried that your child may be having difficulties
  • What early education settings and schools can do to help your child
  • Assessments and Statements

DCSF also produce a range of leaflets to help parents called the 'Help Your Child to Learn' series. These are listed below:

Contact a Family

This is a national charity for families with disabled children, providing advice, information and support to the parents of all disabled children - no matter what their disability or health condition. Contact a Family also enables parents to get in contact with other families, both on a local and national basis.
